Three Hours of Golf
"I can't understand how anyone can write without rewriting over and over again."
That quote is not from some struggling beginner, but from Leo Tolstoy. You've probably seen similar quotes from other successful writers.
Good writing requires that we recognize flaws in our drafts, and that we're willing to work (and rework) our drafts until we've fixed them. So from time to time, we give you examples of sentences that need some rework. Here's one from a respected newspaper:
"About three hours of golf were played yesterday before the USGA postponed the rest of the first round until today."
That's not an awful sentence, and the writer is clearly competent (judging by the rest of the article). But the syntax doesn't make for smooth reading, and invites revision. This kind of rewriting is excellent practice for improving our own writing.
That's where you come in. You're welcome to have a go at it, and to send us your revision.
